If you’re selling a Fire TV read this first: how to erase all traces of your Amazon account

Before selling or giving away your Fire TV, it’s crucial to remove all personal data to protect your privacy and ensure the new user can set it up without issues. A simple factory reset isn’t enough—you must also disconnect it from your Amazon account manually. Here’s exactly what you need to do.

Unlink the Fire TV from your Amazon account

The first step is to remove the device from your Amazon account, which prevents it from being linked to your digital purchases or settings.

Log in to Amazon and go to “Manage content and devices.” In the “Devices” tab, find your Fire TV, click “Actions,” and select “Deregister.” This action removes the link between your device and your Amazon identity, stopping access to your apps, purchases, and personal data. Optionally, you can also erase stored voice recordings.

Reset the Fire TV to factory settings

After unlinking the device, you must reset it. On the Fire TV interface, go to “Settings,” then select “My Fire TV” or “Device & software.” Choose “Reset to factory defaults.”

Confirm the action when prompted, and allow the process to complete without turning off the device. The system will erase all configurations, apps, and data, restoring the Fire TV to its original state.

By combining both steps—deregistering the device and resetting it—you ensure that no personal information remains accessible, and the device is ready for a new user to safely set it up with their own Amazon account.
