Steven Spielberg, the legendary director behind iconic films such as ‘Jaws’ and ‘E.T.’, has long harbored dreams of joining the ranks of James Bond filmmakers.
In a 2011 interview, Spielberg expressed that when he first began his career in Hollywood, his ultimate aspiration was to create a Bond film.
Despite his groundbreaking success with ‘Jaws’, which helped define the summer blockbuster, Spielberg found himself repeatedly rebuffed by Bond producer Cubby Broccoli, a source of frustration for the director.
Spielberg’s Longing: The Bond Film That Never Was
Interestingly, Spielberg managed to embed a subtle homage to his Bond aspirations within ‘Jaws’. During a scene where characters perform a fish autopsy, a Louisiana license plate displaying the number 007 is discovered, sparking speculation about whether it was a nod to the infamous secret agent.
However, the connection did little to sway Broccoli, leading to Spielberg’s eventual pivot to collaboration with George Lucas on ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, a film that scratched his action-adventure itch in a different way.
Over the years, Spielberg’s enthusiasm for Bond never waned; he approached actor Roger Moore for a potential connection to improve his chances, only to face another rejection.
Broccoli reportedly remarked on how much of a percentage Spielberg would want, a reflection of the traditional flat fee structure for Bond directors. Despite his repeated interests and close affiliations within Hollywood, the Bond franchise remained elusive.
Fast-forward to today, and Spielberg’s sentiments have shifted. After Amazon’s acquisition of the Bond rights, Spielberg quipped that they ‘can’t afford’ him. The comment leaves fans to wonder about the potential of a future collaboration, as the world’s most famous spy continues to evolve.
Spielberg’s journey encapsulates not just aspirations but also the competitive and often unpredictable nature of filmmaking in major franchises.
