Does it make sense that Vietnam prohibits access to Steam to protect its creators?

This is a surreal story, but in a 2024 that has banned TikTok in the United States (for now) anything can happen. If you were planning to go to Vietnam for vacation and continue playing your favorite games on Steam, you may want to reconsider that trip, because the Asian country has banned the appโ€ฆ without giving any explanations about it.

Vietnamese Steamed Buns

Apparently, according to reports in Vietnamese media, the ban has come from local studios. While Steam can put as many international games as it wants on its platform without going through the strict control of the countryโ€™s government, local studios need to go through censorship. And of course, they wonder why Valve can break the rules and harm them. It makes sense, but banning Steam from the country was not the solution.

Especially because there hasnโ€™t been any official announcement. Overnight, Steam forums have been filled with users from Vietnam who canโ€™t play and have no choice but to mess with DNS and VPN. Just what you want to do to be able to play โ€˜Helldivers 2โ€™ in peace. For now, nothing else is known, but it seems that gamers from Vietnam will have to get into games from their own country. They wonโ€™t have any other choice.
